Feb 01, 2007 · Sheet-Metal Productivity (On the Edge Solid Edge Tutorial) 1 Feb, 2007 By: Russell Brook Solid Edge v19 includes new SheetMetal tools. Solid Edge Version 19 saw a major update to SheetMetal that lets you document and aid manufacture of sheet-metal components in less time. Curling sheet metal is the process of adding a hollow, circular roll to the edge of the sheet. The curled edge provides strength to the edge and makes it safe for handling. Curling is different than a tear drop hem because in a curl the edge finishes inside itself, where a hem leaves the initial edge exposed.

Aug 04, 2010 · Hi Andy. For sheet metal open hems, we dimension from the edge of the material to the outside tangent of the hem; this makes it easy to measure, and if something needs to fit inside, always give an inside dimension. Flat hems measure the edge of the material to the outside tangent of the hem. We don't use teardrop hems here. In car part production, hemming is used in assembly as a secondary operation after deep drawing, trimming and flanging operations to join two sheet metal parts (outer and inner) together. Typical parts for this type of assembly are hoods, doors, trunk lids and fenders.
